Privacy When Posting Photos On Facebook

All of my family members are on Facebook. It was just a matter of time before I registered too. It’s nice to keep up with what everyone is doing and much easier to post photos once for all to see. However, this is the one thing that I also don’t like about Facebook. The fact that when someone on my friends list posts photos, it’s possible for people that I don’t even know to see them too. Privacy when it comes to the internet and sites like Facebook is something that needs to paid attention to.

For example, someone where my daughter works tagged a picture of her, so it showed up in my daughter’s tagged photos. When I clicked on the photo, I was taken to the group of photos it was originally posted with. In this case, pictures of a company party. So I was able to look at all of the photos this other person took even though I don’t know her or the other people in the pictures at all.

If you’re like me and don’t like the fact that private pictures are not really private at all, there are some things you can do about it. First of all, go into your privacy settings and set them for ‘friends only’ rather than ‘friends of friends’. Then make sure you only approve, as friends, the people that you really want to see your photos.

On the subject of Facebook, I just received a number of emails telling me that my Facebook login information has changed and I need to click on the provided link to update my account. Looks like a legitimate email, except for the fact that I’ve received the same one about ten times in total. One email even included my first name. So I will check, but not by clicking on the link in the email. If I were to do that, it might look like the real Facebook website, but when I enter my login information, I’d be giving it to spammers – crooks. Instead, I’ll go to facebook.com and log in. Then I’ll be sure I’m in the right place.

It is important to be careful about protecting your personal information on the internet generally, on facebook especially. It is equally as important to watch out for those spamming emails that are attempts to fool you into clicking on the links included in them that appear to be legimate sites – like the one I got ten times that seemed like it was from facebook even though it wasn’t.

Privacy, or in many cases, lackthereof, on Facebook, continues to be a challenge for many Facebook users. The truth about many sites on the internet is that even though there are guidelines and privacy settings, you just never know who could end up seeing what really. Keep that in mind when you are posting anything to a site like Facebook. Many younger people, having used Facebook longer than us older folks, have come to find that things they posted and thought were funny in their late teens or early twenties had negative career and/or personal implications in years to come.
