Time For a New Computer?

Computers, like cars, don’t last forever. Nor would you really want them to. Eventually,  the time will come to purchase another computer. And with the options available today, you’ll wonder why you didn’t trade the old one in a long time ago.

Would you like your new machine to be a PC or a Mac? Nowadays, there are many more similarities between the two, though some differences remain. Differences with how things look on your screen and differences in operating systems, so you might benefit from having your new computer be the same type of computer that you are used to, or one like a family member or friend has. The usual advice is for you to get the best computer you can afford. Of course what makes for the best computer is up to each individual to evaluate. The best computer for you is the computer that will meet your computing needs. It is a good idea to ask lots of questions. You can also visit a few different stores where you can try out a computer and get a feel for it, how it looks, works, and feels.

Do you want a desktop, a laptop, or a netbook? Or you might be like me and have or want/need to have all three. I just bought a netbook because I found the laptop too heavy to carry around airports. The netbook is the perfect travel companion, weighing less than three pounds. You can surf the Internet, read your email, use it for word-processing and spreadsheets, just about anything a regular computer can do. The screen is smaller on a netbook. However, my 85-year-old mother bought a netbook and hasn’t had any problem with seeing the display. If you find the keyboard too small or the mouse too difficult, you can connect a regular keyboard and mouse. My next purchase is going to be one of those rubbery looking keyboards that you can roll up and stick in a suitcase.

The most important things are the speed of the computer – the faster the better, how much memory it has – the more the better, and how large the hard drive is – the bigger the better. Hard drive space will be important for you to think about as well because pictures, video, and music take up a lot of room on your hard drive.

Go ahead, check out some of the new models at your friendly neighbourhood computer store. And don’t blame me if you end up with more than one.
