New Year’s Presents A Renewal Weekend For Writers
For many the New Year is a time when people “reconnect” with themselves: spiritually, mentally, or physically. They overlook one valuable place. Often, if they multi-task they forget that they also need to renew themselves in one critical area, in this case their work, especially in the case of writers.
For many writers, there is no such thing as a holiday or time off. Writers can be critical of taking such time since often it is the only type of way to make or keep money. A time of renewal, however is vital. The New Year is the perfect time in which to renew.
Often how to renew is a very personal journey, but there are three things that will help in this journey, which will take a weekend. It will help the writer a lot if they do leave the place where they normally do their work:
A Journal:
One which has never been used for any other purpose than this, it should be blank and unlined, as it will be used for not only writing but also other creative purposes. This is used for this renewal only. Plan to include both pens and coloured pencils on this weekend.
Some Peaceful Music:
A Writer should choose carefully, it should not be loud or distracting nor should it be white noise, or background. As each writer is unique, so should the selection of music. For writer who tends to write late into the night, they should play their peaceful music during the time they normally write, to break the writing habit for the weekend.
A Peaceful, Quiet Place:
Again, it is up to the writer to choose where this will be but not a busy place where they will be distracted. If it is in the mountains or near a beach this is the best location, however if this proves a distraction for the writer, then a busier location should be used.
The purpose of this renewal is to break the driven cycle that many writers face. They need to be kind, as often they will find that they want to be near a computer or “plugged in.” Do not bring a computer to your location or any other writing device other than the journal.
The journal is used to draw what they see or to record their thoughts, paste pictures or anything beyond what they were working on at their office.
It is best to inform people that this weekend is for renewal and not for brainstorming or other types of writing. It is a small break to see where a writer is journeying and if the journey is long or hard, it will be a welcomed break. Encouragement should be asked when informing these people, and not companionship, as often a writer will use the company as a way to “not write,” when the weekend is to focus on themselves and their needs.
Writers should plan to do this, and have a circle of people who will encourage them to take time off that they need to enjoy the work that is oftentimes demanding and undervalued. It is important to remember that all writers are personally valued, and should be encouraged to value themselves as well.
