Writers Holding Back Time?
Can writers hold back time? Can writers bring a time long since passed from life? A simplistic answer is a resounding yes, but this answer lacks some power, as there are many non-fiction writers who do not write with an ease that makes a reader long to continue reading their work. Some are more popular now, however their time is fleeting, and others who were never popular in their own lifetimes, yet they are considered masters of a craft that is unforgiving at best.
What does this do to the writer whose recognition will be after their demise?
What does this mean to the writer who sees their popularity waning?
It is not suffering, it is a learning curve.
To the writer whose time is not yet come to be, the mental bridge of despair can drive them to work harder, and not better. It takes time to comprehend that writing is a journey, and all writers have different journeys to undergo. For some this can be the key to allowing themselves to produce work that is more meaningful. Some come to understand that they can write better, and however long it may take, they will persevere.
They learn to hold time at bay and focus on the task that they have set for themselves. The writer learns that time is limited, for them, but their book might live on. This will allow them a sense of peace and freedom to write better.
Writers who write non-fiction and deal with the past need to learn the value of writers of that era. In particular, they need to learn the value of allowing the people who made the past events speak, it is a fine line between ego and truth. A history writer learns the art of understanding and of patience, and that their writing will be looked on by future generations, again often not in their lifetime.
The learning curve also applies those non-fiction writers who star shines bright from the moment their hand hits the page with the pen. If they see success, they must learn the value of humility. Sometimes this is not seen as a gift, but as a curse. They have money, fame, and fortune, and their names are valued. Later their work is limited to friends and family and their subsequent writing is not as valued by the general public. This is a reality for many writers in a time of social media and mass publication.
This is not to suggest that they have less value, but for these writers the challenge is to understand that they held time at bay, and that at some point their work as been recognized, and fortunate for them, in their lifetime. They learn the art of acceptance and in the end value of magic.
To these writers, the race to capture the magic again can be all consuming, and they might become obsessed with gaining that magic through use of drugs or alcohol. The temptation is there and they need to be aware of it.
Holding time back even for a moment or recreating a past era is a gift that all writers share with each other. For some recognition comes sooner than for others but in the end even if it a simple book in a writers hand with their name on it, it might be all that is needed.
