Life-Long Learning

Learning is a life-long process that you can benefit from continuing to engage. Learning raises self-esteem and self-worth. Learning is part of how each one of us continues to evolve as a person. You are never too old to learn something new. Learning keeps each person in touch with his or her passion.

A man in our town is graduating with his Ph.D. Nothing unusual about that except that he’s close to 90 years old.  He had to leave high school to help support his family, but was determined that some day he would go back.

A number of seniors, many in nursing homes, have embraced life-long learning. From the 91-year-old who has found she has a talent for painting, to the 60-year-old who is learning to use the computer.

Learning doesn’t depend on how much time, money, or health, you have. And no matter what your interests, there is always more to learn. Pick up a good book – even fiction can teach you something, especially historical fiction. Do a puzzle, play scrabble, learn the computer or the piano. Whatever gets your mind in gear.

I’ve been keeping a journal for the last few years, detailing my journey in self-education. At 61years old now, I’m still learning, still trying to push myself past my comfort level. Why, do you ask, when I could be rocking on my front porch and watching the world go by?  Because every time I learn, every time I accomplish something I was sure I couldn’t do – every single time, I grow as a person.

For instance, this past year I wrote my first computer tutorial, complete with audio, and offered it for sale. I started teaching more workshops, attending networking events, even learned to mindmap.

When I accomplish something new, my self-esteem grows. Not in a proud way, but with a quiet assurance that I can face what the future brings me. My confidence grows, so the next time it’s a little easier for me to take on a challenge. And my sense of self-worth grows – even though I’m old in many people’s eyes, I can still contribute a lot to this world of ours. My hope is that you too, no matter what your age, will realize what a special person you are, and keep growing too.
