Review of the book, God Without God: Western Spirituality Without the Wrathful King by Michael Hampson – God Without God seeks to explore what happens to the Western spiritual tradition when the God of presumptive monotheism is removed. Far from being destroyed or diminished, the tradition flourishes in its liberation. It emerges from its captivity as an egalitarian, humanistic spirituality that challenges and defies all earthly powers in its celebration of the realm of the spirit, and the realm of the divine. In acknowledging God who is the ground of all being, we find ourselves in profound communion with the whole human race, for there is only one humankind, only one creation, and only one ground for all being.

Enlightenment is many things. It is even more specifically many different things to each and every individual. Awakening to your own personal enlightenment involves choosing to actively seek to expand and nurture a growing awareness. An awareness that seeks to breathe within and from the rich paradox of serendipitous synchronicity.

Bernie Siegel, MD Author of “Buddy’s Candle” writes, Many years ago my great grandfather told me of the persecution he experienced in Russia which led him to come to this country. He said the Cossacks would pursue him at night, when he was out teaching, and slash him with their sabers. One night he was on the hill above his village with his rabbi, the Baal Shem Tov. As they looked down they could see the Cossacks riding down and killing their Jewish brethren. They might have felt the same had they seen their loved ones being taken away to become slaves in a foreign land.
